Outward Bound is the premier provider of experience-based outdoor leadership programs for youth and adults. Our mission is to change lives through challenge and discovery. Through experiential education programs in both wilderness settings and urban settings, Outward Bound has helped people discover strength of character, an ability to lead, and a desire to serve for over 50 years. Outward Bound California is a chartered Outward Bound school that was founded in 2008 right here in San Francisco’s Presidio.
Kurt Hahn, one of the founders of Outward Bound, believed that through teaching compassion, we can shift how we lead, learn, and navigate the world. Leading with compassion means guiding students through their first outdoor experience with empathy and respect. It is 8th graders from a public school in Oakland sharing the weight of a classmate’s backpack in order to get to camp before dark. We see examples of this every day and are emboldened by the lasting impact of students exercising this type of leadership in an increasingly divisive world.
In 2017, we put our staff, equipment, and bases to the test as we hosted more courses and spent more days in the field than ever before.
- 7 courses
- 95 students
- 809 student program days (SPDs, or number of days a student is out in the field)
- 41 courses
- 429 students
- 5,842 SPDs
- 84 courses
- 1,297 students
- 3,697 SPDs
- 12 courses
- 261 students
- 438 SPDs
Outward Bound California’s 5th annual City Skyline Challenge is back this October! Otherwise known as our biggest annual fundraising rappelling event of the year, City Skyline Challenge features Bay Area entrepreneurs, CEOs, civic leaders, philanthropists, athletes, and other notable thinkers, doers, and heroes rappelling off the 46th floor of the Hilton San Francisco Union Square! It’s not just for San Francisco’s elite, though – we welcome ALL outdoor enthusiasts and community members to join us for an adventure of a lifetime.
We’re looking for YOU – aka volunteers! – to help us with event logistics. Taking place October 12 & 13 at the Hilton SF Union Square, it’ll be a super energetic and dynamic event to be a part of. Both event days are open to volunteers, 7:30am – 6pm both days. Volunteer perks include: goodie bags, snacks / food / drinks, training for specific tasks on the morning of each day, and being a part of an unique event with unique people. If interested, check out cityskylinechallenge.org/volunteer to sign up!
